We are organizing two ways to learn what cohousing can provide for us: a nine-session program and a four-session program. Both explore what cohousing is and how it works. Both meet weekly and conclude with a visit to an existing cohousing community.
Nine-Session Study Group
This Study Group is for those who are forming plans to age in community and make the most of their elder years. We focus on the importance of community as a major factor in aging successfully. We’ll cover the following topics:
Overcoming denial
Care and co-care
Personal connection and health
Economics of getting older
Features and benefits of cohousing
Communication skills that help our communities thrive
We’ll consider the ways that cohousing can accommodate the changes that we anticipate in our lives as we age. We’ll also compare the risks associated with cohousing and with other types of accommodation used by elderly people.
This Study Group will use the coursework for senior cohousing developed by Charles Durrett, a pioneer of cohousing in the USA.
Four-Session Study Group
This Study Group will survey examples of cohousing communities in Europe and in the USA and consider the benefits, essential components, and challenges of cohousing. We’ll also learn some collaborative decision-making skills that are essential tools for members of successful cohousing communities. As our guide we will use the book - “Creating Cohousing” - written by Kathryn McCamant and her husband , the same Charles Durrett who authored the coursework for our nine-session Study Group.
This Study Group will cover the following topics:
How multigenerational communities thrive in cohousing
Communication skills that help our communities thrive
How cohousing communities support family life
